Man is discontented with a single role. He wants to play all roles. Questing, unsatisfied, he is perennially the discontented animal….This restless quest has produced the field glasses through which I watch the hawk and the sparrow. It has produced the materials with which I set down these words. It has also produced the poisons that drench the land and flow down the rivers, the chemical pollution in the air, the abused forests, the extinct wildlife, the threat to man’s survival on earth. What direction this questing, this eternal discontent, will take in the future is of concern to the hawk and to the sparrow–and to me.
